As you may or may not know I;ve been playing this old gem again, as I do once every 4-8 months or so as it good for a blast of fun before the not so deep gameplay sets in once again.
But I thought I;d let those interested know some of the new features since we last had a go
Mostly the main new change to CoH/CoV is that the devs have introdiced both and Auction House and a Crafting system.
Auction house
In this you can anonymously auction off Enhancements/Inspirations and Salvage the 3 main type of loot (as it is) in the game. You have limited trading slots which increase with level and trading success. In these slots you place whatever item or stack of item and set a price. If anyone is looking for an item and has bid a price higher than yours the items is sold. Same goes for bidding. You use the same slots to purchase stuff you need. If you bid a price higher than someone is selling you get an item.
The system is anonymous in so far as you basically set the price and the trade is handle entirely by the system. You cant see whos put what on for how much all you have to go on is what the last 5 sales of any particular item sold for.
Overall the system is handled quite well and is quite different to the usual auction house experience you might be used to with WoW or EQ2 etc.
Crafting
It is now possible to craft your own enhancement to improve your powers. The resulting enhancements give static bonus based on the level of the enhancement. Slotting these powers has the same restrictions as slotting anyother enhancement in terms of level that can be slotted.
The nice thing about these enhancements is that the bonus given never changes or become obsolete. However they cannot be upgraded and can only be replaced. The bonus given is generally lower than same level normal enhancements until you get to around 30th level, then they start exceeding the normal Solo Origin Enhancements.
To create your own enhancement you first have to be level 15 and complete a small series of missions that guide you through the creation process. But basically what you need are A Recipe (one off crafting recipe) the mats or Invention Salvage that it asks for and Influence/Infamy. With these items you then use a workbench (of which our Villian base does possess, and hey presto, one enhancment gracing your inventory for use, storage or selling.
Inventory space on your person is quite restricted but you can use a vault to store 30 more items for use later. This apparently is to encourage the use of the auction house for both buying and selling. I myself have made a small fortune selling unwanted salvage over the 2 weeks ive been back into the game.
Conclusion
The 2 new additions reviewed above have added some much needed extra depth to the game but the real problem with the game though is still the fact that the mission briefs havent really been changed all that much since the introduction of bases or even release and as such the game is still prone to becoming monotonious after a not too long a period of time but having said that it is still massively fun in short bursts

Only in specific zones designed specially for it. And when you enter the level I believe you are scaled to level thirty so that everyone has the same power, although the higher you actual level means you have access to more powers.
Never got into it myself, never been a huge fan of pvp in rpg's, like to keep that to the fps's
The other aspect of pvp is the ability to build a base and invite other supergroups to raid it and vice versa. This however requires a lot of resources, not availble to me when i was playing it (account currently inactive) |

Character creation is very diverse. All manner of heroes/villains can be created.
However the look of your character is pretty much set at this phase. That said every 10 levels you can unlock another costume slot and have another look for your character.
There is no equipment per sae in Cities as the only loot comes in the form of salvage (for creation) and enhancements (which are slotted into power slots to improve aspects of your given power such as reduced mana cost or increased damage or enhanced range). The look of your character purely comes from the creation process and the unlocked tailor slots.
Here are some screenies to show some of it off
Chrysanthia (My current main on Villains)
Lil' Miss Frost (My main on Heroes)
Reefus (or Reefer as he was known back when we played regularly as a guild)
Salubria (Whitlock), Cookiemonster (Cookie), Reefer (Reefus), Jaz (Me), Toccsaron (Toccs), Huntsekker, Lola
A typical combat scene
And then one night we decided to all be the same
The Stormtroopers (These characters made such a huge impression they are still talked about to this day even though they havent been active in over a year

Stormtrooper 1H reporting for duty...
Have to admit despite all the lacks of the game i still think it was one of the most fun ones the TBO has played as a group. |
